Minutes of Monterey Parks Department Meeting, May 5, 2004

*NEXT MEETING WEDNESDAY JUNE 2, 2004, 9AM TOWN HALL

Present: Leroy Thorpe (Chair), Jim Edelman, Chandler Crawford, David Crane, Lynda Mulvey

1. MEMBERS
All the members were at the meeting, Chandler Crawford and Lynda Mulvey have just been elected on May lst and Leroy Thorpe reelected.

2. CHAIR
It was unanimously voted to have Leroy Thorpe again be the Chair of the Parks Departmen for the year May 2004-May 2005.

3. RAFT
Bonnie Tedder ordered the 8 X 12 raft after Parks Department discussion.
It will come after June 30th, when we can pay for it with the new budget.

4. MOWING BIDS
The bids were opened at 9:30 am and bids came from Perry Tree and Landscaping and
Joe Ryan. The Parks Department chose Perry Tree and Landscaping as the terms were better but needed to get their workman’s compensation and equipment list before finalizing it. This will be for a term of three years, rather than one year.

5. LIFEGUARDS
David Crane has contacted them, to discuss again in June, shortly before they start.

6. BUDGET
We will run out of money before June 30th and will need to go to free cash before then.
Our new budget was approved at the Town Meeting on May lst, allowing us to improve playground, beach and ballfield as well as pay for maitenance and salaries.

7. BALLFIELD
Spoke to Perry & Company asking them to mow ballfield again in July and asking them NOT to mow on weekends.

8. SKATING RINK
David Crane to take care of taking boards down as the Fire Dept. sent a letter as it should have been done by April l5th.
9. GARBAGE
We spoke with Mary Heath who was at the town hall and asked her to take care of the beach and playground garbage can cleanup.

10. SWIMMING
Chandler Crawford is continuing to try to find a swimming teacher for the lake
and will put up sign up sheets at various places in town for parents to sign
children up in anticipation of the lessons for July/August.

ll. FENCING
Leroy Thorpe talked to 2 people about the fence and with no coating on the backstop it will be roughly $7-8,000. For futher discussions.

12. PHONES
It was decided to get rid of the pay phone at the beach as it doesn’t work well and is too costly. Chandler Crawford to talk to Verizon about getting a phone, for emergency use only by the lifeguards, inside the lifeguard shed.

13. BEACH
Chandler Crawford to discuss with the Select Board in June the responsibilities of the life guards and what cleanup of the beach area (non-sand areas) come under the Highway
Deparment.
